SYNLAB Stand: 3/Q32

Supporting your employees

Workplace drug and alcohol testing is vital to ensure that the physical safety of employees, however, it can also be a way to support employee wellbeing through an ongoing programme of support.

The upcoming festive period can be difficult for some colleagues with some experiencing loneliness, financial pressures and the usual stress that comes with the season. In these instances, it is easy to see why more people turn to drugs and alcohol during this time. In fact, in a Drinkaware study, 29% of respondents said they feel more pressure to drink with their work colleagues during this time.

Knowing the increased likelihood of substance and alcohol consumption over Christmas, it’s important to be aware of the signs and symptoms so you can offer appropriate support.

Behavioural changes

If you notice any negative changes in a person’s behaviour, no matter what they might be, it is worth keeping an eye on the individual as it may be indicative of a wellbeing, substance or alcohol issue.

One of the biggest signs for chronic alcohol use in the workplace is when a previously engaged employee loses complete interest in work. If you notice someone who usually meets their goals and targets suddenly becomes apathetic towards their work, it could be a sign that they are struggling and have turned to alcohol. Additionally, they may become more agitated with their colleagues or display signs of nervousness; these symptoms are especially pertinent to employees who are usually outgoing and sociable.

Physical signs

A change in an appearance can be a signal that an individual is engaging in worrying behaviours such as drugs or excessive alcohol consumption. When someone is in the midst of dependencey, they’re more likely to have red, watery eyes, frequently sweat and become unable to focus their eyes. They may also take less care over their appearance and turn up to work in dirty or disheveled clothes.
