UKCA/CE marking

Machinery Safety Compliance Services Stand: 3/L62

The essential marks needed for goods in Great Britain

CE marking is to be accepted indefinitely in the UK. However, UK Conformity Assessed (UKCA) marking has been an option for many machinery products sold in England, Scotland and Wales since the end of 2020. It is broadly very similar to the CE mark used by the European Union (EU), a marking made mandatory across the European Economic Area (EEA), even for products made outside the EU.

Technical documentation (Technical Files) must be available to UK/EEA authorities upon request for UKCA/CE marking compliance. This means UKCA gives you a viable option if you are not planning on selling into the EEA. This would remove the need to have a representative in the EU to store files.

While directive requirements for CE marking vary, ‘Authorised Representatives’ ensure document adequacy and provide it to EU authorities. An Authorised Representative is an EU-based legal entity acting as a non-EU manufacturer's liaison with EU authorities.

Importers and fulfilment centres are responsible for CE marking compliance and must hold the Technical File. Importers handling multiple similar products may face conflicts of interest.

How MSCS can help you

If these options are unsuitable, an Authorised Representative is required. They must possess the Technical File, ensure product suitability, and collaborate with EU authorities on compliance.

MSCS, which operates in the UK, can arrange to store and provide Technical Files to authorities in the EU. We offer Authorised Representative services for your company. We also review documentation, explain requirements, and act as the entity compiling Technical Files on Declarations of Conformity/Incorporation.

You can take advantage of our facilities, which include our in-house EMC testing facility, where analysis can be held in laboratory anechoic chambers. Another option is for us to hold EMC tests at your site. We’re ready to go with whichever option you find most cost-effective and convenient.

We can provide combined UKCA and CE certification, so you benefit from a single, streamlined Declaration of Conformity. MSCS keeps you ahead of evolving regulations, providing timely advice and Technical File modifications to ensure continuous compliance across the UK and EU countries.
